HMS Richmond was ordered and laid down in 1756 and launched in 1757 as a Richmond-class fifth rate. Her 32 guns comprised twenty-six 12-pounders on the upper deck, four 6-pounders on the quarterdeck, and two 6-pounders on the forecastle. The Richmond and contemporary Southampton classes illustrate a fleet built in recognizable design groups. Individual styling, ornament, and workmanship could vary without removing the commonality between ships. The initial date given for Richmond's capture is corrected to 1781.
