Richmond's prize-taking in Chesapeake waters

Richmond's captures of Lydia and Good Hope illustrate frigate operations against maritime trade.

Notes

Richmond operated with other British vessels in Chesapeake waters in 1778, taking prizes and pursuing smaller craft. She took part in the capture of the Maryland government trading vessel Lydia off the St Mary's River. On 28 February she captured Good Hope off Cape Henry, a vessel described as Danish-flagged but American-owned. Richmond herself was later captured by a French 74. Her career connects a frigate's attacks on maritime trade with the danger posed by a ship of the line.
