After her capture, Richmond served under the French flag at the Battle of the Saintes. She tried to connect a towing cable to the damaged 74 Glorieux while another 74 covered the attempt. British ships used the wind and their greater cannon power to block the rescue, forcing the rescuers to retreat under fire. With her captain already dead and the rescue abandoned, Glorieux surrendered. Richmond's role shows how a frigate could assist a damaged ship of the line during a fleet action.
