Rice for Boston and the loss of Georgia

After the fighting, Barkley's force obtained rice at Tybee Island but could not restore British control of Georgia or reach Boston before its evacuation.

Notes

Negotiations and prisoner exchanges followed the battle, and the squadron loaded 1,600 barrels of rice at Tybee Island. While it remained there, British crews intercepted arriving vessels and local militia burned houses used by Wright's party and British officers. Barkley sailed north on 30 March, found that Boston had been evacuated on 17 March, was refused help at Newport, and eventually joined British forces at Halifax. Wright's departure ended British control in Georgia until he returned after Savannah's recapture in December 1778. He was the only royal governor to recover his colony and held it until 1782.
