Robert of Rhuddlan, a supporter of William the Conqueror, built the nearby Norman castle at Twthill. Its construction is dated to 1086 in this account. The earlier fortification places Edward I's castle within a much longer struggle for the site. Successive holders had still failed to make control of Rhuddlan permanent.
