Welsh forces besiege Rhuddlan in 1282, and an English relief force arrives under Amadeus V of Savoy. He is 33, already an experienced commander, and a trusted relative and friend of Edward I. He will become Count of Savoy in 1285, at the age of 36. Supplies continue to reach the garrison during the siege, helped by the tower guarding the water access. Amadeus therefore reinforces a castle whose supply route has remained open, which makes the relief operation easier.
