Almeida promised status, pardon, and freedom

A fleet-wide speech tied victory to plunder, promotion, pardons, and improved status for enslaved participants.

Notes

Before the attack, the communications vessel carried Almeida's speech from ship to ship. He promised the right to sack the city, knighthood for soldiers, and elevation for men who were already knights. Exiles and criminals were offered royal pardons despite Almeida's disputed authority. Enslaved participants could gain the status of squires if freed within a year. The promises used social advancement and legal relief to motivate the force.
