War origins, reconnaissance, and émigré expertise

The war's disputed opening included British coastal reconnaissance and an active effort to recruit experienced French naval émigrés.

Notes

The video treats the outbreak of war as more complicated than a single French shot at HMS Childers. British small vessels had already been mapping the French coast because London expected conflict, while British links with Austria and Prussia made escalation likely. Provocation and preparation on both sides make a clean starting gun difficult to identify. Britain was also helping capable émigré officers and specialists leave France. That recruitment campaign would transfer scarce naval experience at the same time revolutionary upheaval was making French institutions harder to sustain.
