Why three-star reviews can offer useful criticism

A preference for middling reviews rests on whether criticism identifies something the author can improve.

Notes

Three-star reviews are Alex Clarke's preferred place to look for constructive criticism of books and history videos. A one-word dismissal gives him little he can use to improve the work. Unqualified five-star praise is encouraging, but it can be equally short on specific observations. His preference concerns the usefulness of a review to its creator, rather than a rule that middling ratings are more accurate.
