How older turrets and barrels reached the Roberts class

The class drew on a Royal Navy inventory of 15-inch equipment, including a turret tentatively traced through Furious and a documented Roberts barrel later displayed at the Imperial War Museum.

Notes

Abercrombie's turret is tentatively identified as a 15-inch mounting intended for HMS Furious before that ship's design shifted toward 18-inch guns. The mounting then served in a Marshal Ney-class monitor during the First World War and remained available for another generation of use. Such reuse depended on the Royal Navy retaining complete heavy-gun equipment and a pool of spare barrels rather than treating each ship's armament as disposable with its hull. One Roberts barrel had previously served in HMS Resolution, entered the reconditioning pool, and replaced a rejected barrel during the monitor's fitting out. Its later display at the Imperial War Museum preserves that documented chain of service. Photographs said to show large stocks of complete turrets still require careful dating.
