Chapter · 31:31-34:05

Landing sailors during the Imo Incident

During the Imo Incident, Tōgō landed sailors to protect Japanese civilians withdrawing from Seoul after unpaid Korean soldiers rebelled.

Notes

The Korean government created a security crisis by failing to pay its army, leaving the authorities with few loyal forces to call upon. Tōgō brought part of his ship's company ashore to protect Japanese civilians during their withdrawal from Seoul. HMS Kingfisher may have been the Royal Navy sloop that sheltered the refugees. That assistance illustrates the practical Anglo-Japanese friendship developing before the formal alliance.
