Resolution moves from Dakar damage to Philadelphia modernization

A French submarine torpedo sends Resolution through Freetown and Portsmouth before American work increases her main-battery elevation and range.

Notes

Resolution was torpedoed by the French submarine Bévéziers during the Dakar operation, leaving Barham to continue the capital-ship engagement without her. Six months of work at Freetown preceded a return to Portsmouth, where German air attack demonstrated the danger of keeping damaged capital ships in British yards. Philadelphia Naval Shipyard then repaired and modernized the battleship. Raising the main guns to 30 degrees increased their range and helped make the old ship useful for subsequent Eastern Fleet service. By 1944 she was back in Britain and largely out of action.
