Resistance reputation shaped the survivors' escape story

Lindell's early resistance service and forceful extraction work complicate later accusations made as the political value of claiming resistance increased.

Notes

Lindell worked in the Resistance before Allied victory appeared likely, while some people joined only after the liberation of France had begun. Later participants may have protected their own reputations by casting long-serving agents as collaborators or secret double agents. Despite illness and disputes with MI9, Lindell took command when Hasler and Sparks reached her network and directed their route toward Spain. Combined Operations learned that the two survivors were safe only on 23 February 1943, and Hasler did not return to Britain until 2 April.
