Researching naval lives when the archives are out of reach

The opening explains why recovering pre-1850 shipwrights and naval figures requires archival access beyond books and online sources.

Notes

The planned pre- and post-1850 survey had to be divided because early shipwrights' lives were too difficult to reconstruct with the sources then available. Many of those designers were important, but their careers could not be traced responsibly without access to physical archives. Books and online collections still offered useful evidence, including the Canadian Military History journal and London Gazette citations for Victoria Cross awards. Access to archives limits the questions a naval historian can answer responsibly.
