Research costs and the debt behind a successful book

A personal account of financing a first book shows how a second edition can coexist with research debt that royalties have yet to repay.

Notes

Alex Clarke financed his first book through a credit card after expecting royalties to repay the expense. The book appeared through USNI in America and Pen and Sword in Britain, publishers he credits with promotion and circulation. Its income had still failed to repay the borrowing. Video income was covering interest and gradually reducing the balance. Although the book had sold well and reached a second edition, the research costs had not paid for themselves.
