Researching beyond a naval-history specialty

A doctorate demonstrates the ability to investigate unfamiliar questions, while broad naval-history teaching still demands fresh reading.

Notes

University naval historians often teach across wide periods because there are few specialists in any one department. Public videos can expose gaps in portions of a subject that existing lectures did not need to cover. A doctorate certifies research capability rather than complete knowledge. When a broader explanation requires those missing parts, the responsible response is to find and read the necessary sources. Passion and a habit of comparison across periods provide the motive for that extra reading.
