Serious damage would instead require withdrawal to India, Australia, or possibly Britain. Another panel member argues strongly for leaving the theater, prompting the qualification that glancing torpedo damage could allow more limited repairs. India is the likely repair destination in that version of the scenario, followed by service with the Eastern Fleet. Repulse beside Warspite in the fast group would give Somerville greater confidence about encountering one or two Japanese Kongō-class ships.
