What a Tiger-standard Renown might have gained

Tiger's heavier standard suggests how Renown might trade additional displacement for guns and speed.

Question

Why did Renown use less tonnage than Tiger, and what could a Tiger-standard Renown carry?

Short answer

The designs served different concepts; extra displacement could plausibly buy a larger 15-inch battery and perhaps slightly more speed.

Notes

Tiger was designed to fight other battlecruisers, while Fisher's Renown concept emphasized economic warfare. Renown and Repulse are put at 26,500 tons beside Tiger's 28,500 tons. Building a Renown to Tiger's standard is estimated to require closer to 4,000 extra tons once its 15-inch guns replace Tiger's 13.5-inch weapons. That larger ship might carry three triple turrets or eight guns in four twins. It is expected to remain as fast as Renown, and perhaps slightly faster.
