How effective was HMS Renown's armor against 8-inch and larger guns?
Short answerIt was adequate against cruiser fire and could endure 11-inch hits, but her internal protection remained below fast-battleship standards.
NotesRenown's protection depends on the engagement range and the part of the ship struck. A modernized Renown is judged a credible opponent for an 8-inch cruiser or an 11-inch-gunned ship in a River Plate-style encounter. Her actual fighting against Scharnhorst and Gneisenau provides the comparison: she took damage without being disabled and arguably inflicted more damage on her opponents. Modernization improved her protection while leaving her a battlecruiser. Both armor and internal subdivision still fell short of the fast-battleship standard used in this discussion.
