What a Renown-type ship might have meant in the Philippines

A brief Spanish-American War counterfactual tests how much strategic weight Renown's speed, endurance, and battery could carry overseas.

Notes

A counterfactual places a fully worked-up Renown-type ship in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. Its four 10-inch guns would still have provided less firepower than a first-class battleship, but the ship's speed and long cruising range could have made it a serious regional opponent. The hypothetical puts the preceding specifications into an operational setting. It also explains why formal classification alone could understate the value of a second-class battleship on a distant station. A different result for the war remains a judgment about a possible outcome.
