Renown and Repulse as adaptable battlecruisers

The Renown class is presented as an unusually effective return on displacement and cost after construction and modernization.

Notes

Renown and Repulse combined high speed, heavy 15-inch armament, and, in this assessment, a capacity to influence operations disproportionate to their cost. That practical value did not depend on adding more armor or building a larger successor. A proposed alternative to the much larger Hood is a lengthened Renown-type hull with three triple turrets, preserving the class's efficient basic idea. Their speed and striking power made them unusually flexible capital ships despite their vulnerability.
