Rendel, Armstrong, and the sales campaign behind Esmeralda

See how professional prestige and aggressive publicity sold Esmeralda as a fast, commerce-threatening export warship.

Notes

Rendel's standing as a naval architect and Admiralty civil lord gave authority to Armstrong's export designs. His professional honours and leadership in the Institution of Naval Architects reinforced the prestige attached to his work. Armstrong then promoted Esmeralda as faster and more powerfully armed than any British cruiser able to catch her, invoking the Confederate raider Alabama to dramatize the danger. The claim was salesmanship, but it reveals how builders marketed cruisers through strategic missions as well as specifications.
