What capability should be added to vertical-launch systems?
Short answerA safe internal method for reloading at sea, potentially using movable cell blocks or onboard missile assembly; otherwise trainable launchers may be easier to replenish.
NotesSafe at-sea reloading is the missing VLS capability because complete missiles are expensive, fragile, and dangerous to move between ships. One concept uses eight-cell blocks that travel on internal rails to a protected rearming space. Another moves warheads, guidance units, motors, and fuel in safer packing cases so the crew can assemble each missile aboard ship and carry it directly to the launcher. Internal handling would avoid suspending a complete multimillion-pound missile between moving vessels and would work better in rough weather. Trainable launchers and magazines offer an alternative because they are easier to replenish. Reloadability has to be designed into the ship from the outset.
