Reichsmarine light cruisers designed around offensive mining

Offset after turrets and stern-oriented firepower on Emden's successors reveal that offensive minelaying shaped Reichsmarine light-cruiser design.

Notes

The German light cruisers' visible layout reveals their intended mine-warfare role. Tracks and working space at the stern supported carried mines, while offset and rearward-pointing guns left room for handling them. The arrangement also gave a ship firepower while withdrawing after laying an offensive minefield. Emden was followed by the Königsberg class and the closely related Leipzig and Nürnberg designs, creating a recognisable Reichsmarine lineage. These were cruisers, but Baltic offensive mining strongly influenced how their aft sections were organised.
