Why the Regia Marina and Cape Matapan resist simple stories

Italian naval operations are easy to neglect because they lack a simple cinematic climax, while Cape Matapan demonstrates that effective combat should look unfair to the defeated side.

Notes

The Mediterranean campaign's long, interlocking operations do not fit the decisive-battle narrative that makes episodes such as the River Plate easy to dramatize. Postwar politics and affection for the Italian people can also encourage accounts that isolate responsibility in Mussolini and leave the Regia Marina at the edge of the story. Cape Matapan resists cinematic treatment because its climax was three battleships and a carrier overwhelming Italian cruisers at night before they could answer. In this reading, that apparent unfairness was the product of a long operational process and successful command. Cunningham's duty was to create a fight in which the enemy could not reply and his own crews did not die merely to make the contest look even.
