Why refrigerated cargo ships mattered in 1939

Refrigerated ships such as SS Tairoa carried meat and other perishables that wartime supply networks depended on during the Second World War.

Notes

SS Tairoa was a refrigerated cargo ship of roughly 8,000 gross tons. Ships like her carried meat and other perishables across oceans, an important part of wartime supply during the Battle of the Atlantic. Britain and its partners depended on this traffic, and refrigerated ships were also worth liberating during wartime operations. Tairoa's sinking removed a merchant hull and refrigerated cargo capacity from that long-distance supply network.
