Red Sea and Black Sea lessons depend on confined geography

Confined seas sharply reduce the offshore space in which ships can hide, so their combat lessons do not transfer unchanged to the Atlantic, Pacific, or Indian oceans.

Notes

A force operating 200 to 250 nautical miles offshore has an enormous search area available in the Atlantic, Pacific, or Indian Ocean. The same distance leaves few possible positions in the Black Sea and may be impossible across parts of the Red Sea. Map scale therefore changes how easily a ship can hide, manoeuvre, and stay outside coastal weapon range. Combat reports from confined seas need that geographic context before they are applied to ocean warfare.
