Why people enlist shapes force quality

Prestige, service, adventure, family security, social advancement, and lack of alternatives produce different kinds of motivation inside the same armed force.

Notes

Recruitment is treated as an economic and cultural outcome rather than a simple headcount. People may enlist to serve, seek adventure, gain prestige, climb socially, secure a livelihood for their family, or because the wider economy offers no other place. Those motives can coexist, but their proportions affect commitment and professional behavior. Someone trapped in service without wanting it presents a different institutional problem from someone whose identity and household security depend on a military career. Similar force structures can therefore perform differently when the societies supplying their recruits are not alike.
