Recruit for ability and willingness to learn

Rudolph and the elves illustrate why recruitment should favor ability, commitment, and willingness to learn over a conventional appearance.

Notes

Santa's unconventional helpers support an argument that recruitment should begin with capability. Elves do not resemble the traditionally muscular, experienced craftspeople imagined for the job, but uniforms, tools, and status can change how others see them. Rudolph's bright nose guides the sleigh at night, turning his unusual appearance into a practical advantage. Presentation can be taught and adapted to the setting. The drive required to acquire and improve skills must come from the individual. Recruitment based on image is therefore a warning sign for an organization. Existing ability may indicate a record of learning, but leaders must still judge whether the candidate will retain the drive to learn more.
