Real warship gunnery aims for all-round coverage

The Adamant's side-mounted guns prompt a comparison with destroyers designed to keep useful firing arcs across much more of the horizon.

Notes

A spacecraft can use top-and-bottom mounts or careful weapon placement to cover more approaches than a conventional hull. The game's blind zones contrast with Tribal-class destroyers, whose fore-and-aft guns retained useful arcs toward the opposite end of the ship, and Battle-class destroyers, whose forward concentration cleared their fields of fire. Real designers and naval officers generally resisted leaving a large sector entirely uncovered. The omission seems especially implausible for an advanced society that has used these designs long enough for service experience to reveal their blind arcs. Some Colonial ships also ask the same guns to serve as both the main armament and the close-in defensive system, although those roles require different coverage and responsiveness.
