Reading the 1947 beacon paper as historical evidence

The principal engineering paper explains the mature Type 72DP first and treats earlier systems in relation to it, forcing historians to reconstruct the development sequence carefully.

Notes

The technical history is difficult to present as a simple chronological sequence. The strongest published source is a 1947 engineering paper whose mathematical organization centers on the mature Type 72DP. It repeatedly moves backward to explain the 72X and 72DM in relation to that final form instead of building from the simplest equipment toward the most complex. That structure suits engineers analyzing system behavior, but it can obscure development for a historian asking what changed over time. The organization and purpose of a primary technical source therefore shape the history that can be recovered from it. Gaps and ambiguities in the surviving record also require caution when reconstructing the earlier systems.
