Razing removed one or more decks from a ship built for the line of battle. The converted vessel retained heavier structural timbers than a purpose-built frigate or many new fourth rates would receive. Its reduced profile could combine cruiser employment with unusual strength and heavy armament. Such a razee also had the space and authority to lead smaller units, making conversion another alternative to constructing a conventional fourth rate from scratch.
