Rawalpindi before conversion: a P&O mixed liner

Rawalpindi began as one of P&O's R-class mixed passenger and cargo liners on the London-to-Bombay route, not as a purpose-built combatant.

Notes

Rawalpindi belonged to P&O's four-ship R class, built for the London-to-Bombay route. These mixed liners paired comfortable passenger accommodation with substantial cargo capacity, making them stable and economical commercial vessels rather than pure ocean liners or warships. Their civilian design, including the distinctive interiors associated with the Mackay family, followed priorities very different from those of naval construction. The ships could work far from their intended route, which reflected robust commercial construction, but Rawalpindi still lacked armour and other warship protections. Her civilian origin sets the limits of what a rapid wartime conversion could accomplish.
