Rapid decapitation plans and underestimated opponents

An April 2022 comparison links the Civil War's capital-focused offensives with Russia's expectation that a quick strike on Kyiv would collapse Ukrainian resistance.

Notes

One April 2022 interpretation treats Russia's helicopter assault and advance on Kyiv as an attempted rapid decapitation campaign. On that reading, the initial assault sought victory within hours, followed by an attempt to surround the capital when the first move failed. The operation's structure and earlier Russian practice make a deliberate diversion less convincing in this assessment. The plan appears to have relied on Ukrainian leaders fleeing and their defenders collapsing, but resistance and fuel shortages disrupted it. Union and Confederate leaders made similar assumptions that a direct advance would cause the opposing political system to disintegrate. Treating an opponent as foolish or unwilling to fight made victory seem easy and the expected cost of war seem small.
