Rapid carrier redeployment still needs escorts

Sustained high speed can move a carrier between theatres unexpectedly, but a peer-war deployment needs escorts able to accompany it.

Notes

A nuclear carrier can sustain maximum power long enough to shift between theatres without the normal propulsion-fuel constraint. That creates regional rapid reinforcement and strategic surprise, especially if an opponent's surveillance or order of battle misses the move. Maskirovka, deliberate concealment and deception, could help hide the transfer. The Battle of Midway supplies the historical comparison, where an unexpectedly available carrier forced the enemy to confront a different balance of forces. A carrier should not make such a peer-war dash alone because submarines and other threats still require an escort screen. Bainbridge adapted the Leahy-class destroyer-leader design, while Truxtun adapted the Belknap pattern, giving the fleet a small number of nuclear escorts able to keep pace. Conventional groups could then assemble at the destination, allowing the arriving carrier and escort to reinforce an existing formation.
