Range control is the decisive tactical advantage

A long-range gun matters only where it can still hit and penetrate, so the simulated King George V tries to stay just outside Yamato's effective 18-inch range.

Notes

The video distinguishes a gun's theoretical maximum range from the distance at which it can still hit often enough and penetrate effectively. At roughly 45 kilometres the British 14-inch gun can reach Yamato, but useful penetrations are unlikely. Near 30 kilometres it can exploit better accuracy and damaging fire while remaining close to the edge of Yamato's simulated 18.1-inch reach. Speed and manoeuvre matter because the British ship must preserve that narrow range advantage. Storms reduce the reliability of the tactic, and Yamato can win if it closes far enough for a heavy shell to find a vulnerable gap.
