Range and secondary batteries shape the terms of an action

A running engagement illustrates how gun range and smaller batteries can decide who is forced into the other's effective zone.

Notes

The opponent's main battery is only just entering range while its secondary turret remains ineffective. The British 6-inch weapons begin firing first, and the target is likely to enter 3-inch range before it can answer effectively. Both sides initially struggle to hit, so theoretical range alone does not guarantee useful fire. The side that controls distance can force the other to accept a fight on unfavourable weapon terms.
