Chapter ยท 41:54-46:21

The hit on USS Randolph and its limited result

After an exhausting approach, one aircraft struck USS Randolph, but the raid's losses far outweighed its operational effect.

Notes

Two aircraft reached Ulithi after about ten hours and 47 minutes in the air. One hit the Essex-class carrier USS Randolph with so little fuel remaining that it did not ignite. The strike killed 26 Americans and wounded 105, while Japan lost at least 13 aircraft and roughly 60 to 70 men. The second aircraft crashed into a baseball diamond without damaging a military target, while Randolph returned to service for the Okinawa campaign.
