Planning for a return to Europe began before Dieppe

Ramsay's planning after Dunkirk challenges the claim that Dieppe first revealed the requirements for the Normandy assault.

Notes

Ramsay began planning a return to continental Europe after the Dunkirk evacuation. The requirements for such an assault were therefore under study before Dieppe. Existing British plans had already rejected methods later used in the raid. This chronology challenges the argument that Dieppe was necessary to discover how the Normandy operation should be organized.
