Ramming as secondary bow strength

A strengthened bow or emergency ramming ability could still be useful, but it did not justify building a warship around collision with another armored ship.

Notes

By the time of Tsushima, the ram had returned to a secondary role rather than serving as a fleet's main tactic. A strengthened bow could still be useful in special cases, as HMS Dreadnought demonstrated when its only kill came from ramming a submarine. That success did not justify deliberately colliding with an equivalently armored battleship. A ramming melee at Jutland would also have ignored the torpedoes and long-range artillery available to both fleets. Age-of-sail prize warfare imposed another limit: a navy hoping to capture an enemy vessel gained nothing by sinking or crippling both ships in a collision.
