Chapter · 36:25-38:43

Raleigh’s effective governorship and fortification of Jersey

Jersey gives Raleigh a clearly defined, funded fortification project suited to his strengths at Elizabeth Castle.

Notes

Raleigh’s governorship of Jersey is one of his most stable and successful periods. The island needed stronger defenses, and its economic and constitutional position gave him a workable setting for a construction project. His plan remains visible in Elizabeth Castle despite later additions for artillery and successive wars. Raleigh could perform well when his visionary temperament was applied to a defined, funded objective.
