Railgun and Gauss-gun barrel wear are different problems

A short technical distinction explains why electromagnetic-launch terminology matters to maintenance as well as propulsion physics.

Notes

Railguns and Gauss guns apply magnetic fields differently when accelerating a projectile. The Chinese work under discussion is described as closer to a Gauss-gun arrangement. Calling it a Gauss gun identifies a different engineering approach and leaves its potential open. In theory, a Gauss-style barrel should be easier to repair and maintain, making barrel wear an important development tradeoff.
