A railgun could make a modern battleship's large-gun mission credible again. One experimental concept fires a roughly six-inch projectile to about 220 miles at around Mach 7, which would give the ship a broad striking radius. The large electrical plant proposed for propulsion, sensors, and jamming could also support the weapon's energy demand. Unlike missiles hidden inside vertical-launch cells, visible turrets communicate firepower immediately during a diplomatic visit or confrontation. That signaling value complements the weapon's potential operational range. The concept remains conditional because rail wear, reliability, and development maturity are unresolved engineering problems.

Railguns combine long-range fire with visible deterrence
A roughly six-inch railgun could offer extreme range and a visibly understandable main battery, provided its power and materials challenges are solved.
