Did the squadrons that later fought at Coral Sea and Midway gain combat experience from these raids?
Short answerYes. The raids gave the air groups and carrier crews experience against real opposition before the later carrier battles.
NotesJapanese forces had already gained combat experience in China, while British wartime reports showed the limits of peacetime training. In exercises, attacking aircraft often pursued the carrier or another prestigious target because the crews faced no real danger. Under fire, crews could instead attack whichever target they believed they could hit. Exercises could therefore produce misleading lessons even when they supplied the best available evidence. The early raids let American air groups and their ships begin testing those expectations in combat.
