Ragnar's modest weapons still complicate an invasion

Weapons upgrades kept 30-knot Ragnar-class destroyers dangerous to an attacker despite their age and limited firepower.

Notes

The older Ragnar-class destroyers combined Yarrow boilers, twin shafts, and triple-expansion steam engines with a top speed of 30 knots. Their range was 1,400 nautical miles at 16 knots, and their original armament included four 75 mm guns and two 450 mm torpedo tubes. Later additions included machine guns and twin torpedo mounts replacing the single mounts. These changes kept the ships threatening despite their age and limited capability. For defensive deterrence, their value lay in forcing an attacker to find and counter them, even when they could not win an offensive fleet action.
