R-class flexibility in wartime production

The R-class example combines varied wartime missions with later ASDIC trials, showing the operational flexibility expected from a destroyer.

Notes

The wartime R-class example favors balanced, buildable ships that can undertake varied missions. These destroyers could escort the fleet, protect or harass convoys, conduct shore bombardment, and serve on detached duty. Rowena's later anti-submarine work at Portland included trials of ASDIC and the development of ASW methods. Such testing generally kept her close enough to home to give the crew more family time, although receiving new equipment also meant being expected to use it first.
