The different wartime careers of the R-class sisters

Rawalpindi's sisters illustrate how comparable merchant hulls could become an armed patrol ship, a repair vessel, or a troopship with very different outcomes.

Notes

The four R-class liners did not share a single wartime conversion path. Ranpura became a Royal Navy repair and fleet depot ship and later served during the Suez Crisis, while Ranchi became a troopship before returning to P&O service. Rajputana served as an armed merchant cruiser and was sunk by U-108 shortly after leaving convoy HX 117. Setting those careers beside Rawalpindi shows how merchant tonnage supported patrol, maintenance, transport, and postwar service according to need rather than one uniform design concept.
