Quiet design revolutions become visible in war

The obvious Dreadnought moment is contrasted with subtler design changes, such as the 1936 Tribal-class destroyers and the durable Abruzzi class, whose value became clearer only through war and long service.

Notes

Some naval revolutions announce themselves, as HMS Dreadnought did, while others become clear only after war tests them. The 1936 Tribal-class destroyers offer a quieter example: a balanced large fleet-destroyer design that other navies soon approached without giving the transition a famous label. The 1930s also produced ideas that combat quickly discredited, so hindsight cannot show how difficult it was to identify value at the time. The Abruzzi class belongs on the successful side of that divide. Slightly less speed bought armor and capability, and the ships remained important in postwar Italian service. Incremental changes in force design may matter as much as a spectacular technological break.
