What Quiberon's depth-charge attack says about wartime loads

Three passes over a submarine raise the question of how many charges Quiberon actually carried compared with her listed allowance of 45.

Notes

Quiberon reportedly made three passes over a submarine and got the ships she was escorting through, although whether the attack sank the submarine remained uncertain. One reading gives 36 depth charges from her four throwers alone, before counting releases from the racks. Adding 30 from the racks would produce 66, already above the listed allowance of 45. The account may contain errors, and alternative readings of the firing cycles give different totals. Even the lower reconstruction of 42 charges would leave only three for the return journey if the nominal allowance were correct. Extra wartime stowage is therefore a plausible explanation, but the actual load cannot be established here. Fleet stock and expenditure records do not necessarily reveal what one destroyer carried on a particular sortie.
