Why crews fought and what prize money promised

Survival, loyalty to shipmates, professional duty, and hope for life ashore all motivated crews, while rank and responsibility shaped how rewards were divided.

Notes

Prize money resembled a bonus for dangerous work, compensating in part for hardship and loss of personal freedom. Officers received larger shares than ordinary sailors, but they also bore command responsibility and could face court martial after failure, while individual sailors could earn bonuses for particular actions. Crews had several overlapping motives in battle: doing their jobs well enough to survive, protecting friends and shipmates, and hoping a valuable prize would finance life beyond naval service. Many hoped to open a tavern or inn, though a sudden windfall did not always provide lasting comfort.
